Meet Daisy...

By now you’re familiar with Daisy’s picture-perfect profile and her beautiful bovine face that appears throughout OhioDairyFarmers.com. But there’s more to Daisy than just her good looks. Daisy is a Holstein, a breed of dairy cows that is easily recognized by their distinctive black and white (and sometimes red and white) coloring. Daisy and her fellow Holsteins can weigh up to 1,500 pounds and eat nearly 100 pounds of nutritious feed and drink 25-50 gallons, or nearly a bathtub full, of water each day.

Not only is Daisy a star on Ohio dairy farms and here on OhioDairyFarmers.com, she and her friends also are featured in their very first video – A Day on the Farm: Starring Daisy and her Ohio Friends. Check it out!

While Ohio dairy farmers take pride in raising and caring for all breeds of cows, Holsteins like Daisy are among the most popular breeds in the U.S. and known for their high milk production.

and Matilda!

Matilda is Daisy’s new best friend. You can quickly tell she’s not part of Daisy’s Holstein family, and that’s because Matilda is a Jersey, the smallest breed of dairy cows recognized by their fawn-colored coat. Although Jerseys don’t produce quite as much milk as Holsteins, their milk has a higher butterfat content, which is perfect for making dairy foods such as cheese and ice cream. And make no mistake, Matilda appreciates being milked just as much as Daisy and other cows do, which means you can find them in the milking parlor two or three times each day.

There’s more to dairy than just a couple of cool cows.

While they’ve become fast friends, Daisy and Matilda have other friends on the farm with their own unique story to tell, too – and it starts with the dairy farmers who care for them.
